More historical medical crises … Casualty 1907 comes to BBC One
Charity Wakefield (Sense And Sensibility, Rapunzel), Cherie Lunghi (EastEnders) and Sarah Smart (Five Days) lead the cast in Casualty 1907, a new three-part series on BBC One this autumn.
Following the popular Casualty 1906 (December 2006, BBC One) this new series again plunges viewers into the various medical crises in London’s East End 100 years ago.
Each one-hour episode of Casualty 1907 uses case notes, ward reports, autopsy records and diaries to bring actual doctors, nurses and patients at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, vividly back to life.
The series captures a world in which life expectancy is just 45, and where one in seven children die by the age of five. Streets are teeming with trouble. Gangland rivalry is rife and fears about terrorism and security are on the increase. Yet, despite the extreme hardship, resilience in the community is remarkable and their fighting spirit shines through.
Casualty 1907 is a Stone City Film production for BBC One and also stars William Houston (North And South), Tom Riley (Miss Marple), David Troughton (Midsomer Murders) and up coming star Alfie Allen.
The series was commissioned by Martin Davidson (Acting Commissioner, Specialist Factual).
Bryn Higgins is the Series Producer (Stone City Film).
Charity Wakefield, Star of Tomorrow?
ScreenDaily.com has named Charity Wakefied as one of their UK Stars Of Tomorrow 2007. But I think we all know she is already a star!

CHARITY WAKEFIELD
Expect to hear a lot more of Charity Wakefield over the comings months. She plays Marianne Dashwood in the BBC’s prestigious autumn series Sense And Sensibility, and the role is likely to propel her right into the spotlight. It comes after several solid performances on the stage, including the verbatim play about the London bombings, Yesterday Was A Weird Day, which played at the Edinburgh festival to wide critical acclaim, and the Old Vic’s 24 Hour Plays last year.
On Sense And Sensibility, Wakefield and her co-star Hattie Morahan, who plays her sister Elinor, were encouraged to make their characters real people, “not historical figurines stuck in corsets”. A fan of Dogme films – which she says “bridge the gap between theatre and film” – Wakefield is now filming the BBC’s modern retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale, in which she plays the lead.
Filming begins on Andrew Davies’s three-part adaptation of Austen’s Sense And Sensibility
Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield join David Morrissey, Dominic Cooper, Dan Stevens, Mark Williams, Janet McTeer and Mark Gatiss leading an all-star cast in Andrew Davies‘s romantic, witty and stylish new three-part adaptation of Austen’s Sense And Sensibility, a BBC Drama Production for BBC One.
Sense And Sensibility is a story of two young sisters on a voyage of burgeoning sexual and romantic discovery.
Restrained, rational Elinor Dashwood and the wildly romantic, impulsive Marianne Dashwood are played by sensational newcomers Hattie Morahan (Elinor) and Charity Wakefield (Marianne).
The death of their father throws their privileged world into chaos. With no entitlement to his estate, they are forced to live in poverty. Although the sisters’ chances of marriage seem doomed, attractive men are drawn to Elinor and Marianne.
Elinor becomes attached to the highly-eligible Edward Ferrars (Dan Stevens, The Line Of Beauty) – but why is he so guarded and secretive?
Marianne attracts both war hero Colonel Brandon (David Morrisey, State Of Play) and glamorous, Byronic Willoughby, played by Dominic Cooper (The History Boys).
But do these attachments represent true love, or are the men simply amusing themselves with our young heroines? With a sub-plot that features the seduction and abandonment of a 15-year-old schoolgirl – not to mention a duel – the stakes are high.
Multi-award winning writer Andrew Davies (Bleak House, Pride And Prejudice) says: “The novel is as much about sex and money as social conventions. This drama is more overtly sexual than most previous Austen adaptations seen on screen and gets to grips with the dark underbelly of the book.”
Producer Anne Pivcevic adds: “Our version explores the female gaze as we follow the story through the women’s eyes. It’s a wonderful mix of youthful passion and warm, funny moments.”
Kate Harwood, BBC Head of Series and Serials, says: “Sense And Sensibility will be a shining example of the strength of the inspirational, creative craft of our in-house drama team.
“It’s a passionate and powerful piece, filled with a rich mix of both emerging and established talent. With Andrew’s fairydust sprinkled over it, the BBC Drama production of Sense And Sensibility is destined to evolve into a classic.”
Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: “This adaptation of Sense And Sensibility is classic Andrew Davies: his writing goes straight to the heart of Jane Austen’s novel and together they create a piece of work that is bold, original, authentic and powerful.
“Together with the wonderful return of Dame Judi Dench to BBC One in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford, the serials reaffirm the BBC’s position as the home of intelligent, ambitious drama.”
Sense And Sensibility is filming on location in Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Devon until early June.
It is a BBC Drama Production: commissioned by Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction; written by Andrew Davies; directed by John Alexander; produced by Anne Pivcevic; the executive producer is Jessica Pope for Kate Harwood, Head of Drama Series and Serials for BBC Drama.

Charity Wakefield
Charity Wakefield, a 24-year-old actress from Sussex, has been enjoying success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Yesterday Was a Weird Day by Look Left Look Right theatre company.

A selection of verbatim monologues extracted from interviews about the July 7 London bombings, the play received a large amount of media attention due to its inclusion of Robin Cook’s last ever interview.
“There was a lot of anticipation about how it was going to be received as it’s a sensitive subject,” says Charity. “But we felt it needed to be explored.
“The interviews were done with the knowledge that the people could be really personal about their feelings, so the interview with Cook was incredibly moving.”
Charity graduated from the Oxford School of Drama in 2003 and has starred in several short films, including Exitz with Malcolm McDowell. She was also chosen from thousands of hopefuls to take part in the Old Vic’s 24-hour plays at the end of July, an experience which she says has made her feel more excited than ever about the industry in which she works.
“I met a vast selection of incredibly creative and intelligent young people, who I’ll stay in touch with. We all feel that we’re now part of this amazing, competitive theatre industry that we have in London.”
